TEACHER INFORMATION

Ideas about and practices of citizenship throughout the Asia region are explored through the materials and activities presented in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. The text is illustrated with examples of individuals and groups contributing to their society. Social issues that citizens are confronted with, as participating members of their nation, are also presented as case studies. The student activities provided in the three activity sheets on this website build upon and complement the published text. The country-specific focus for the activities is on Pakistan, Singapore and China. The student activity sheets are designed to be printed for classroom use.

Learning Outcomes
Students will:

  • examine and evaluate the activities and impact of a young human rights campaigner in Pakistan
  • consider the activities and motives of volunteer groups in Singapore and the role they play in community development
  • investigate, access and critically evaluate a range of websites about China's One Child Policy
  • design and develop the framework for a website on the basis of their research on China.

Individuals Make a Difference: Pakistan

This student activity sheet complements material and activities presented in 'Citizens Count!' (pp 2-7) in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. The theme explores how citizens can work together to make a difference. The student activity sheet is designed to invite students to reflect upon how individuals can also make a difference. The specific focus is child labour in Pakistan and the profile of a young human rights campaigner, Iqbal Masih.

Volunteers in Singapore

This student activity sheet provides an avenue for new work within the theme of citizens working together to make a difference. Voluntary community work and outreach in Singapore is featured to illustrate how citizens can and do contribute to their society. Students visit up to three websites to investigate the concept and application of volunteerism.

Teachers may choose to do some initial classroom work on volunteerism, and the number of website visits could be limited to only one or two if the investigation appears too in-depth.

Website Investigation and Design: China's One Child Policy

This student activity sheet is a structured web search activity. It is designed to develop students' proficiency in web research and their appreciation of the characteristics of a useful website.

The activity builds on the case study entitled 'Too Many in the Family', presented on pp 29-30 of Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia.

In the web search activity, students investigate the status and impact of China's One Child Policy, and simultaneously evaluate the features of each website they visit.

The student activity sheet culminates in students designing the framework for a website entitled 'China: The One Child Family', which uses their research and incorporates the most useful and appropriate website features.

Suggested Strategies

  • Brainstorm for possible search words, synonyms and associated paraphrases with the whole class.
  • As a class, further define the website usefulness rating scale of 1-5.
  • Divide the class into groups or teams to perform web searches, collect and collate relevant information.
  • Encourage group discussions and subsequent class discussion about the useful features of websites.
  • Groups or teams design and develop their website framework and present it to the class, either in print form or as overhead transparencies, for appraisal.
